The case of a 13-year-old girl who recently gave birth has been referred to the Police for an investigation.

The Samoa Observer understands the young mother and her baby are recovering at a local hospital.

It was not possible to get a comment from the Police at press time.

But an official at the Samoa Victim Support Group (S.V.S.G.), who spoke to the Samoa Observer, confirmed that the minor has been referred to their protection.

They have since referred the matter to the Police, she said.

A source told the Samoa Observer that due to the child’s young age, she did not give birth at a local hospital but instead had the baby at home.

It could not be confirmed if the 13-year-old is Samoa's youngest mother.

But the birth comes after S.V.S.G. released statistics that the number of abused children, whether it is physically, mentally and sexually housed at the Campus of Hope has increased.

There are more than a 100 women and children now in residence, seeking refuge from all sorts of abuse.

According to Police Statistics, domestic violence cases have increased by 17 per cent.
