The National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) will push ahead with its plan for an online graduation for students who were previously scheduled to graduate in April.

The N.U.S. President and Vice Chancellor, Professor Aiono Alec Ekeroma, made the announcement in a live talanoa session on Tuesday using the university's Facebook page.

The online graduation will be for students who were originally scheduled to graduate in April this year.

"We will have our online graduation or our social distancing graduation on the 25th of June," he said. "This graduation is for students who were supposed to graduate in April but were unable to because of the strict restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic."

He said due to the extension of the state of emergency (S.O.E.) for another four weeks, the physical ceremony cannot be done on campus.

"Now that the S.O.E. has extended until July, we’re still unable to carry out a face to face graduation which is why we have now planned the online graduation," the Vice Chancellor added. "I'm also sure that another extension of the state of emergency will follow after this one ends in July."

Professor Aiono said parents of students who will be graduating had asked that the NUS administration get the graduates' photos screened on television during the online graduation ceremony.

"We have been asked that for the upcoming online graduation if it’s possible to have the photos of the students graduating screened when their names are called out," he said. "We have the photos of all the students in our records when they had their student identification taken so we’re thinking of using those photos during the online graduation."
