Passi’s ‘extraordinary’ cabbages

Passi Ie’u from Si’usega knows all about hard work and family.

To Passi, these are the most important things in his life.

The 56-year-old has his own cabbage patch in front of his house.

When he spoke to the Village Voice, he said those were “extraordinary cabbages.”

Passi said his cabbage patch is part of his house decorations and landscape.

And through his cabbage patch, he is able to contribute to the financial stability of his family.

“As you can see, there’s barely any space on my land because it has been covered with a whole lot of cabbages,” he said.

Passi uses a different method of tending to his cabbage patch.

“I don’t use fertilizer and that’s why they are so huge. You hardly find big cabbages like these around these areas.

“I think that the fertilizers can destroy the soil, so instead of using fertilizers I use manure.

“I don’t know about other people but that’s my way of doing things which I believe could make a huge difference in any plantation.”

Passi says this is his contribution to his children’s future and he did not want to fail so when they grow up, they can continue to take care of their land.

“I want us Samoans to know that this is something that we should focus on instead of trees. Instead of going to faraway land to plant food; just have your plantation in front of your house as a garden because it is truly a beautiful scene. Well that’s for me anyway.

“I make a good living from this and especially with White Sunday coming up, I’m sure a lot of people are going to buy cabbages for Sunday’s to’anai (feast).

“It is the fastest way to make money and I can assure you that these cabbages won’t disappoint you.

“I sell it from Monday until the end of the week and money is always coming in. I am thankful that I’m still earning money from the work of my own hands.”
