The Museum of Samoa at Malifa was a place of reflection, recollection and paying tribute to the past on Thursday night.

The occasion was the annual Museum Night as part of the celebration of the Literacy Week in Samoa.

Hosted by Lumepa Apelu, the Principal Museum Officer, among the guests were Alain Godonou, Director Officer-in-Charge of U.N.E.S.C.O Apia and Esekia Solofa, Chair of Remuneration Committee for the government.

The evening focused on the theme of the week, which was “Literature and Heritage.”

“It is very important for our society to talk about our history,” said Ms. Apelu. “Our museum keeps a lot of records of the past. Our generation and our children are dependent on those records so this is a place to come to learn about the history of this country.

“Every year we try to bring in for the Museum night different speakers, who talk about everything relating to heritage, tradition and culture. They also reflect on modernisation and how things have changed in the past years.” The speakers over the years have included academics, artists, media practitioners and others.

On Thursday, the Speakers were Dionne Fonoti, an anthropologist of the National University of Samoa and Fealofani Bruun, the first female captain of Samoa Voyaging Society (S.V.S). They shared their views about history, the challenges, successes and their journey to where they are today.

“I am really amazed by the speakers tonight,” said Ms. Apelu. “I am very proud on them. I worked with them for the last years and they have really grown. These people are very, very knowledgeable. This is a good sign about the meaning of the event, and it should be continued also in the next year.”
