Samoa is so relaxed
“Samoans have a very relaxed lifestyle, they are loving and very friendly people,” said Bethany Marett from Timaru, New Zealand who is here for a couple of weeks.
On a business trip, Bethany is taking advantage of the opportunity and has been around Samoa three times.
She’s also keen to learn about the Samoan culture and hopes that the tourists that come here utilize the chance to do the same.
“I think it’s important for the people to understand what they are coming here for.
“If they want to come and stay in a resort for five nights that’s nice but it’s actually, important to know about the culture and experience staying in a faleo’o,” said Bethany. “I mean some people can come here and not really get into the culture, that’s ok, but it wouldn’t hurt to delve into it a little bit.
“What I love about Samoa’s culture, is that relaxed lifestyle, going with the flow and just how things are done in a very easy manner, there’s no rushing and fancy stuff.
“Another thing I love about Samoa is the hospitality of the people, its overwhelming to say the least.
“You ask for help and they lend a hand, and they go beyond and the effort put into your request is just amazing,” said Bethany.
She was impressed with Samoa’s tradition of the tattoo.
“I had no idea about the heritage behind tattooing and how it signifies that a Samoan man is strong, in body and mind,” she said while giggling. Bethany was surprised about how “happy” Samoans are.
“They are happy with what they have.
“In New Zealand having a flash house is a sign of wealth but, everyone lives in open houses and they are happy.
“They don’t need a flash house to be happy, I mean it’s just different.”
Bethany also spoke about the importance of how villagers can just take in their neighbour’s child and take care of them - something that never happens in New Zealand. “It’s very different. I feel like it’s very relaxing.
“The biggest thing for me is the lack of free wifi, you know back home I’m always on my phone but since we’ve been back, it’s been on and off the internet and its quite awesome. “And it’s been so good for us not being on the phone all the time,” said Bethany.
