Tropical Cyclone Wasi was tracked to about 120 kilometres south of Upolu this morning and is continuing to move in a southeasterly direction away from the island, the Meteorology Division said on Sunday morning. 

A tropical cyclone warning remains in effect for Upolu but has been downgraded to a strong wind warning for Savai'i. 

In an update released at 10 am, forecasters said TC Wasi had been tracked to 118 kilometres south of Tafitoala. By late this afternoon, it is on track to have moved to 230 kilometres off the island's southern coast. 

"The system is moving southeast at a speed of 17km/hr," the Division said in a statement.

"Winds close to the center of Tropical Cyclone Wasi [are] around 83kph."

But heavy weather conditions are predicted to continue buffeting Samoa for the remainder of the day. 

In Upolu, northwesterly winds are forecast to reach speeds of between 63 to 75 kilometres per hour. 

Savai'i can expect less intense winds, still reaching between 46 to 61 kilometres per hour. 

At sea, waves and swells are projected to reach between two to four metres. 

A heavy rain warning remains in effect for the entire country, while a landslide warning is in effect for vulnerable areas. All major rivers and vulnerable areas are subject to a flood warning, while a coastal advisory remains in effect for low-lying coastal areas due to high surf.
