Asau joins the celebration
Situated in the North West coast of Savai’i is the village of Asau.
This week, while some villagers could not make it to Apia for the official programme, that did not stop them from showing their pride during the celebration of the 54th Independence on Wednesday.
While thousands marched the grounds of Tuanaimato to commemorate the anniversary, the youth of the Methodist church of Asau joined hands and turned the event into fun activities.
The celebration started in the morning with a car float that circled the village.
A church service was then conducted by Rev. Reupena Asiata to give thanks before the national flag was raised in the village by Masoe Iuafi.
The youths were divided into groups where they competed for the best Manaia and Taupou in which a car float, talent quest and cultural dance were incorporated in the competition.
The youth also took part in preparing the traditional preparation of food for an umu.
Rev. Reupena Asiata and his wife Ripena are serving the Methodist church.
The other spiritual leaders from the Catholic church and Methodist of other sub village of Asau were judges for the competition.
Valentina Masoe won the Taupou for the 54th Independence and the Manaia is Matia A’emalo Afitu.
At the closing of the celebration, Rev. Reupena requested that the next Independence should be a fellowship amongst the youths from different churches in Asau.
