A teacher from Savaii was one of the 40 graduates from the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (A.P.T.C.) yesterday at the Methodist Hall, Matafele.

Walkie Kolia is the son of Kolia and Sefine Kolia from Patamea, Savaii.

He graduated with a Certificate III in Education Support after six months.

“I have been a teacher for ten years at one of colleges in Savaii within the Arts field, I teach history and this is the first time I have achieved higher education through A.P.T.C.,” he said.

The 33-year-old had to move from Savaii and stayed in an accommodation provided through A.P.T.C.

“I thank God for this golden opportunity so I can enhance my knowledge and skills. After completing this journey there were so many things that I learned which I had no knowledge before.”

He acknowledged the Australian Government for the opportunities which has benefited him greatly.

“I did not face many obstacles because I was provided accommodations, allowances and I was able to leave for study leave from work.

“The reason behind choosing to apply for educational opportunities at A.P.T.C. was because I have plans of finding employment overseas if it is in God’s plans for my life.”

He also spoke about the significant role teachers play in life hence why he chose to become one.

“I wanted to become a teacher because the role of teacher is very important in society. 

“Teachers have the roles of teaching and nurturing students who are the future generations with the right knowledge and set of skills that will enable them to have a better future.

“If children have a good education then we will not have to worry about their futures and it is true that education is the key to a successful future that can eliminate poverty and provide financial support through employments.”

He also said that one of his future goals is to pursue higher education opportunities.

“Nowadays, so many of our youths are unemployed and that leads to so many problems whether it is crime or families living in poverty.

“I want to advise the unemployed youths to try and seek jobs and then register for educational opportunities to that they can support their families and help them stay out of trouble.”
