Samoa is not the same anymore

Tolotolo Mulivai from the village of Fusi, Safata believes that Samoa is not the same anymore.

Aged 70, Tolotolo said the developments we have in Samoa now have both positive and negative impacts.

“Compared to how life was back in the days, we didn’t have that many developments like we have now,” he told the Village Voice.

“We have so many nice tall buildings and a lot has changed over the years.

“But the problem is, life is getting more expensive.

“We didn’t really have to rely on imported goods back in the days. I remember when we could take care of our families even with just $20.

“We also didn’t have to go to the shop often because most families had vegetable gardens, pigs, chickens, taro, banana, breadfruit and others.

“But we hardly see that nowadays;  people now depend on imported goods a lot.

He went on to say that he missed the simplicity of life back in the days.

“Like I said earlier, there have been a lot of changes in Samoa nowadays.

“Everything was a lot easier and we used to have really strong bonds within our families.

“Family in Samoa is very, very important. And I believe that a lot of changes in the behaviors nowadays is because family values are starting to break down.

“We used to live with extended families and have evening devotions every day. Our culture was stronger and beautiful back in the days.

“Children were very obedient and we never used to have all these troubles and problems like we have nowadays.

“Children especially the youths, were very respectful back then.

“But I know there’s nothing we can do because there are a lot of changes and the world is changing too. We are all moving forward.

“There are also some good changes we have and I see them.”
