Moamoa Kitiona of Samatau and Salani Falealili says she is desperate to find work to help her family.

Moamoa was selling green coconuts in front of her home when the Village Voice team caught up with her.

The 28-year-old is a mother of five children. She lives in Falealili.

“I can deal with how life has changed, how we feel like we are struggling sometimes,” she said.

“I can cope with all that. I just need a job because my husband and I don’t have jobs at the moment.

“The cost of living is too much, as you can see we’re only selling niu for a living.

“We sell it everyday and it costs $2 for one niu.

“You may find it hard to believe but we always have to collect nius every single day just so we can make some money.

“I have two kids at school and my youngest ones here at home, so this is for them.”

The couple also have a plantation.

“We barely sell it because not many people buy it; well not the ones who take this route,” she said.

“With the niu we sell, by the end of the day we usually get about $30, so we put aside $10 for electricity every month, save $10 for water every month, and then the rest is for our food, especially the kids’ needs for school.

“My kids go to Lotofaga Primary School, so they always have to catch rides from here to school.

“Sometimes for me and my husband; when we can’t get rides, we just walk to where we want and try to save the money for food.

“That’s why I want to work. I’ve always wanted to work because if you have a struggling life, I tell you, it’s even more struggling when both parents don’t have jobs to support your family.

“I can do any work, whether it’s cleaning, working the lands, work for any shops, I will take anything as long as it’s a job that suits me.

“Things are hard for us, I admit, but we try to do things ourselves instead of depending on other people.

“That’s why I need to find myself a job; I’m hoping that I would find one soon because I need money to support my family.”
