Head of State declares XVI Pacific Games open

The Head of State, His Highness Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, has declared the XVI Pacific Games officially opened.

His Highness Tuimaleali'ifano spoke at the opening ceremony currently underway at Apia Park tonight.

The Head of State wished the athletes and officials from 24 countries taking part in 27 sports over the next two weeks God’s blessings.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, who is also a Games Athlete, and the President of the Pacific Games Council, Vidhya Lakhan were among the speakers.

The number of participants in this year’s competition is the highest for the Games to date, with the Pacific Games Office confirming more than 5,000.

The opening ceremony is being held under lights at Apia Park in beautiful conditions after a day of rain in Samoa.
