Pacific journos to produce first podcast on female athletes
Seven female journalists from across the Pacific are in Samoa to undergo a three-day workshop on producing the first podcast out of Pacific based female athletes.
Spearheaded by Australia Broadcasting Corporation (A.B.C.) International Development and funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (D.F.A.T.), the participants are from Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
The objectives of the workshop are to provide the participants with the chance to work on the first Women in News and Sports (W.I.N.S.) podcast – be part of a team that is producing a podcast for the ABC and iTunes, and an opportunity to be featured in Australian and international media about the activity, learn the art of compelling interviewing from one of the ABC’s leading practitioners in radio and podcast.
Executive producer of podcasts for ABC, Justine Kelly, who is also the trainer for ABC International development, said the podcast, which is another form of telling stories through an audio format, will be highlighting remarkable female athletes from around the Pacific who will be in Samoa to compete during the Pacific Games.
“I think it’s an amazing project, which I would be interested to be involved in because it will feature talented women and working together to be able to do that, I think is quite special.
“My aim is to fold and produce the first podcast of its kind out of this region and make that the best that it can be.
“But the bigger aim for me is to be able to get women involved in this project, knowledge and the skills to be able to go away to publish in their own communities and be able to think about what podcasts can we now produce that tells the story of our people or our area,” she said.
Ms. Kelly said despite the audience of podcast in the Pacific region being quite small, the programme allows women involved to be the forerunners leading the way in their countries to build podcasting.
“The other benefit of this program is that people have strong connections between the ABC and the organisations where the participants are from and also there will be follow-ups on the training.”
W.I.N.S. is an initiative by D.F.A.T. partnered with ABC International Development - it is a training and mentoring program that provides female journalists in the Pacific and Asia with the tools to carve out a career in the male-dominated world of sports media.
