An initiative to improve access to information for the blind and visually impaired people in Samoa is being driven by the Samoa Blind Persons Association (S.B.P.A.).

In partnership with Nuanua O Le Alofa (N.O.L.A.), a four-day training began yesterday at the N.O.L.A. conference room at Saleufi, and is attended by members of both organisations.  

The training on the Day Braille Embosser User, service, repair and maintenance training program also looks at improving access to materials in braille through the use of braille embossers, which are used to convert electronic documents into braille, said a statement from S.B.P.A.

“This will improve the capacity of the existing Braille production unit which was established in December, 2018 under the Civil Society Support Programme.”

The training is being run by Anna Lau,  Managing Director of Index Brailles Technology System in Malaysia. 

“There are also plans to partner with local electronic companies which are able to provide technical assistance, particularly in the area of servicing and maintaining of the Braille Embossers/printers.” 

S.B.P.A acknowledges the Samoa Civil Society Programme and N.O.L.A. for their ongoing financial and logistical support.
