An Australian visitor has described his short stay in Samoa as a "very pleasant" experience.

Phil Makin from New South Wales, Australia told the Samoa Observer that Samoa had the perfect mix with its tourism industry not "over developed", was very laid back and had people with lovely personalities.

"It’s very laid back, it’s very nice. It’s not over developed which is good and the people are very friendly. Its good to be somewhere where there's not too much tourism and not too over developed – very pleasant," he said.

He is visiting the country courtesy of his partner, who flew over to Samoa for business, which gave him the opportunity to also come along.

And while he has enjoyed his visit, he said Samoa could be a bit more cleaner, with hopes that the next time he returns to the island, he will see rubbish bins set up in different locations.

"They could probably try especially that waterfront, maybe keep it a little bit cleaner and perhaps maybe a little bit more cleanliness. Just something to do with litter, but I’ve traveled all over the world and its probably no worse than everywhere else," he added.

However, despite the litter concerns, the 61-year-old Australian said he is having a good time in Samoa and he is comfortable and safe.

"A few more garbage bins but other than that it feels quite safe. We went for a tour on the other side of the island and then we went around and basically walked around a bit and went to the Robert Louis Stevenson museum and then went for a walk up to the top where he's buried," he added.

Phil said he had a good experience at the Vailima tourist attraction and Samoa Observer he's keen to learn more about Samoan culture.
