M.P’s graduate with Certificates in Law

The University of the South Pacific (U.S.P.) is celebrating 50 Years of service to the Pacific region through a week long chain of events.

Part of the Alafua campus’ celebration in commemoration of this milestone, was a special graduation ceremony which saw 18 Parliamentarians graduate with Certificates in Law (Civil).

The University’s Certificate in Law programme was under review at the time they received the Members of Parliament’s request to undertake the programme.

However, in line with the U.S.P’s mandate to respond to the needs of member countries, the School of Law revised and developed the programme to explicitly meet the needs of Samoa.  This was to ensure that the programme delivered to the M.P’s was particularly designed for Samoa and its legislations.

The purpose of the course was to enhance the legal knowledge of Parliamentarians and assist the M.P’s in the process of reviewing new and existing legislation with a clear benefit for the economic, social and sustainable development of Samoa.

Course developers and lecturers for the programme were Professor Eric Colvin, Head of School, School of Law – Emalus Campus, and Emeritus Professor Don Paterson, Telei’ai Dr. Lalotoa Mulitalo, C.E.O. of Samoa Law Reform Commission and Principal Solicitor for Leavai Law Firm – Leota Tima Leavai.

The Certificate of Law was a six unit course that was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (U.N.D.P).
