The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (F.E.S.A) conducted a fire drill in Apia on Thursday.

The drill put both F.E.S.A and members of the public through their paces in terms of responding to an actual fire.

The exercise covered the block of buildings from the A.C.C Building to the S.N.P.F Plaza.

The Commissioner of F.E.S.A, Lelevaga Fa’afouina Mupo, said the drill is an ongoing activity to ensure the safety of the public. He added that they targeted this particular area because of the number of old buildings there.

These buildings are mostly wood and in the case where there is a fire, at least F.E.S.A officials would know what to do.

For the drill, the alert came from Eveni Carruthers around 4:30pm.

It only took a few minutes for the Fire services to arrive. Everyone was immediately evacuated to a safe area to allow F.E.S.A to work.

F.E.S.A worked with their partners in the Ministry of Police, Samoa Water Authority, Electric Power Corporation, Ministry of Health and the Samoa Red Cross Society.

“It is a matter of team work,” he said. “It’s all about saving lives.”

Lelevaga said a similar drill was carried out at the government building and other places.
