Tutasi Tavita’s basic dream

Tutasi Tavita for so long has been longing a supply of running water.

For 14 years, Mrs. Tavita has never experienced the joy of turning on a tap since she settled at Lalovi Mulifanua.

The mother of six shared that they fetch water from her in-laws. Every day.

Mrs. Tavita says this is because they live on the highland and water only reaches families who live close to the road.

“We still don’t have water, but some families that live around this area have received help from the government in terms of receiving water tanks, but we have just my in-laws and they live a little further down from our house,” the 37-year-old shared with the Village Voice team.

She added everything in Samoa today has become costly which is another issue people are struggling with.

The only person who works in her family is her husband.

Mrs. Tavita shared her husband works as a mechanic in an auto shop in their village and he gets more than $100 a week.

“Just by observing how the things are run in our country, if we do not have anybody who works, they will struggle looking for ways to feed their children, pay for their education and also their commitment to the church and the village.”

Since she doesn’t work she decided to have a garden of vegetables to help her husband.

“We don’t have a plantation, but I grow peas, tomatoes and cucumbers which I sell and it is another source of income, but if I don’t work, then we don’t have any other source of money.”

She says with school resuming soon, providing for her children is another added burden.

“I have two of my children who are in college, while the other two are in primary school and my other child will be in kindergarten this year as well. Regardless of free school fees, it is still costly because I would need to buy their uniform, bus fares and stationeries.”
