PR - The Port of Apia’s Enhancement of Safety Project is confirmed to commence this month and scheduled to complete in June 2018.  

This project is funded by Japan under a Grant Funding Arrangement through its Joint International Cooperation Agency (J.I.C.A).

Minister of Works Transport and Infrastructure, Papali’itele Niko Lee Hang signed the contract on behalf of the government of Samoa with the winning contractor Wakachiku Co. Ltd of Japan.

The Enhancement of Safety Project will see the following improvements for the Port of Apia by June 2018

- Reconstruction of Container yard and pavement

- A mooring dolphin on the NE side of the new extension

- Rehabilitation of Concrete beam and slab

- Installation of New Fenders

- Rehabilitation of Navigation AIDS

- Walkway and movable fence for Cruise Ship Operations and Passengers

- Tug Boat rehabilitation works.

During the contract signing ceremony in Japan on 03 June 2016, the Contractor Wakachiku Co. Ltd presented the Minister with a Work Schedule Programme that kicks off this month with Preparatory Works up until the completion of the project in June 2018. 

The Work Schedule Program takes into the impact of the Rainy (cyclone) Season from October to March therefore major construction works required under the project  are scheduled to take place during the Dry Season (April to September). 

Samoa Ports Authority endeavours to work together with Port Users manage the potential impact of the Project works on the Shipping Lines’ sailing schedules ensuring little or no disruptions to shipping services including the movement of passengers as well as import and export cargo.
