Toa Leaupepe from the village of Fasito’o doesn’t believe in wasting precious time.

While others at his age are roaming around, he makes every day count.

The 23-year-old is unemployed but he has a plantation.

He admits that his family is going through a lot but there is always a way out.

“There are too many changes in Samoa and there are a lot of problems we face,” he said.

“It’s the usual problems which come when you are lazy and do not work hard. One of the main problems faced by my family is money.

“I live with my parents and siblings, my sister is the only one to provide for us financially, but since she’s leaving this Friday for overseas we will have to figure out something else.

“We try not to rely on the strength of others; we try and do the work on our own.”

With many young teenagers mucking around in the town area causing trouble, Toa says there are more important things in life to do.

“Instead of causing trouble, the youth should be helping out with their families.

“If you love your family then do things like this, stay home, work the land, gather food and make use of time. That’s the way I live.”

Toa said no one is supposed to sit around and do nothing.

“We can’t keep on saying the cost of living is killing us and yet we sit around and depend on others.

“To be honest the real case here is that people only starve because they don’t work. I strongly believe that there is no poverty in Samoa.”
