The long wait at Leone

Residents living near the Leone Bridge are still waiting for action.

The bridge was destroyed by Cyclone Evan in 2012 and nearly four years later, it still hasn’t been fixed.

A disappointed father of two from Maluafou, Maiava Tonu’u, said the wait has been frustrating. “I am not sure why it has taken so long,” he said.

“I understand the process of everything because I was with the government as well for more than thirty years. But this has taken too long.”

Tonu’u joked that maybe the government is planning to build a “four-storey bridge” or a “bridge where we can see our reflection (mirror) when we walk on it.”

On a serious note, Tonu’u is urging the government for action, as soon as possible.

“It was the beginning of this school year that I saw some students crossing the river to get to the other side,” he said. “This is very dangerous.”

“Climate change is one of the main problems that we’re facing today and we may never know what tomorrow will bring. They (government) must be waiting for an accident to happen….”

The invitation for bids was advertised on the 9th November last year from eligible bidders for the construction of the Leone Bridge and was closed on the 11th January, 2016.

It was not possible to get a comment from the Land Transport Authority yesterday.
