Teachers return to the classroom

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture will utilize the first school holidays for 2017 for a series of training, targeting various areas in which teachers need further assistance.  

According to the Chief Executive Officer, Afamasaga Dr. Karoline Afamasaga-Fuata’i, this is the only time when the Ministry can carry out national training to cover as many teachers as possible.  

This will be the first time the Ministry has carried out national training of this scale – targeting close to 1700 teachers for primary, 800 teachers for secondary and 800 school principals.  

The first series of trainings will be for Upolu teachers. It started yesterday until Thursday. For Savai’i, the training will be from Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th April 2017.

The Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio opened the Year 12 and 13 sessions, which will be held at the M.E.S.C. Headquarters.  Other training sessions will be opened by the C.E.O and A.C.E.Os of the Ministry.

Targeted areas to be covered include:

• Literacy and Numeracy

• Strategies for effective teaching and learning

• Mental Strategies for Mathematics

• Feedback sessions on SSC & SSLC results for Year 12 & Year 13 Teachers

• Strategies to target SSC & SSLC poor results

• Leadership Induction for New Principals (1-5 years of experience)

The focus is primarily on the teaching and learning with a session run for School Principals on effective leadership to assist school management personnel who need assistance.

Trainers and facilitators for the training are mostly staff of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture with relevant expertise and experience.  Other sessions will be led by staff of the Oloamanu Centre at the National University of Samoa.   

New Principals with 1-5 years of experience for both Primary and Secondary Schools will also go through a Leadership training to target the different leadership and management areas as stipulated in the Leadership Standards for Principals.  This training will be facilitated by a local consultant engaged by M.E.S.C.

Teachers of Mission and Private Schools have also been invited to attend the trainings.
