The Leauva’a St. Michael’s Catholic Church is one of the few historical sites still standing in Samoa today.

In preparations for its 100th year anniversary, the church is being renovated, according to Sala Pesa.

The people of Leauva’a village are among residents of Savai’i relocated to Upolu as a result of Mt. Matavanu volcanic eruption in 1905.

Sala Pesa said this is one of many historical events contained in the rich history of the village. The church building is another important aspect.

“The main purpose and motive of renovating the Church is because we are celebrating its 100th year anniversary since it was built in 1917,” Sala said.

“The anniversary is this month but we are preparing and setting everything to be celebrated during Christmas because friends and families of Leava’a from overseas will be present during the get together in Christmas.”

Sala said Leauva’a village has already celebrated its 100th year anniversary since their relocation.

“We have already celebrated the relocation anniversary. This time it’s the church. Our ancestors did not come and immediately build the church, it took them years to clear the land and then set up this Church we have been using up until now.”

Sala said the Church had their feast day last Sunday.

He added because of the strong foundation of the church, only minor renovations were needed.

Sala said their ancestors told them how they moved there and they were amazed that with not many people present at the time, they were able to build the church.

Sala is calling on friends and families of Leauva’a in Samoa and abroad to come together and celebrate the milestone achievement.
