Let God’s word guide Samoa this year.

This was the message from the Chairman of the National Council of Churches, Deacon Kasiano Leaupepe, at the closing of the Government’s Week of Fasting and Prayers yesterday.

Deacon Leaupepe emphasised the importance of the word “treasure.”

“The word of God is indeed your greatest treasure,” he said.

“This is why we should all come together. It is indeed a new year, therefore let go of our differences and forgive each other.

“But let God’s word guide us all in this year’s journey so that it will be smooth sailing.”

Deacon Kasiano also challenged the leadership of the Church.

“As church leaders, we have to set good examples so that the people will follow too.

“Today, we must acknowledge God for making everything possible and for us to reach yet another year safely.”

The service, held at the Government’s Prayer House at Palisi, was well attended.

The Head of State, His Highness, Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II and his Masiofo, Fa’amausili Leinafo were among the congregation. Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament and public servants were also present.

The service was led by Reverend Deacon Kasiano with assistance from other church leaders including the President of the Apia Central Stake, Jason Joseph, Rev. Matauaina Kolia, and Rev. Talomua Mona.

This year is the 28th year since the government of Samoa initiated the annual week of prayers and fasting in order to request God’s protection upon Samoa as the country goes through the Cyclone season.

Samoa has been safe during the festive season with Christmas and New Year’s over and done without any cyclones affecting the country except for heavy rainfall.

But Samoa is not yet in the clear from the cyclone season.

The gathering ended with a lunch prepared for all the attendants.
