Life is easy when you’re happy.

But to be happy, you need to be free.

That is the opinion from Malotuto’atasi Nuuamoa.

The 45-year-old from Siusega says happiness is the key to a long life.

Speaking to the Village Voice yesterday, Malo says that whatever needs to be done at home, it’s very important to work together so that everyone is happy.

“Teamwork is very important especially within our very own families,” he said.

“I don’t have a job, I develop my own plantation and I make my own money. That makes me happy.”

Malo lives with his brother and nephews at Siusega.

Two of them work.

Malo is multi-talented.

“My duty everyday is to clean the land by picking up the rubbish, weeding and making sure the house is clean.”

Asked for his thoughts on the cost of living, Malo said: ”Our people think that the cost of living is too high, but to me it’s not.

“We have a plantation to get whatever we want, that’s the freedom I’m talking about.”

Malo believes our people depend too much on money.

“For me and my family, we only ask for money from our relatives overseas when there is a family fa’alavelave,” he said.

“But throughout the whole week we survive from the fruits of our plantation.”

Malo is also conscious about his health.

“I like exercising and to move my body around by weeding the plantation. That’s all the gym I need. The best thing is that I’m happy doing it.”
