Five young people were arrested and charged by Police last week.

This was confirmed by the Police Media Officer, Su’a Lemamea Tiumalu.

Su’a declined to confirm where the young people are from except to say that they are all from the same village.

The five young people face charges of disorderly assembly, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment if convicted.

“These youths are between the ages of 16 and 18 years old,” he said.

“They will appear in Court on the 23rd August 2016 in court,” said Su’a.

The Spokesperson said the five youths are not members of a particular gang.

He denied the existence of youth gangs in Samoa, saying they are just rumors being spread through social media.

Gangs in Samoa, he said, are illegal.

“If they do exist in Samoa, they can be charged with disorderly assembly, disorderly conduct or riots, which they all carry a maximum penalty of one to two years imprisonment.

“Police are still investigating the matter and are working closely with villages closer to town.”

Su’a also acknowledged the support of every village near the town area in assisting Police to solving the matter.

Last week, members of a youth gang from Vaimoso known as the Original Blood Outlaws knelt before the Village Council to ask for forgiveness.
