Seventeen-year-old Hiroko Mose of Aopo, Savaii, is Vaimauga College’s 2017 Dux.

She is the fifth child of Tupa’i Mose and Tauaina Eetau’s eight children.

Besides being the Dux of Vaimauga, she also scooped the top Commerce student, top in Samoan studies awards and second place in the J.I.C.A. Mathematics test.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Hiroko’s mother, Tauaina said she was very proud of her daughter’s achievements.

“I didn’t expect this to happen and I was full of surprise when my daughter’s name was called,” she said in tears.

“I knew she was getting prizes, but to be the whole school’s Dux, I’m just out of words.

“This is the best gift that our daughter could give us for this festive season and so this is a season of thanksgiving and celebration.

“I know this is just the beginning of her journey and I am confident that she will go far because she is very faithful to her school work.

“She makes a lot of sacrifices because of her school work and as a mother, I am very proud of her.”

Hiroko says she wants to be an accountant in the future.

“I have always been passionate about becoming an accountant,” she said.

“From a very young age, I knew this is what I wanted to do because I love mathematics and especially nobody can fool me when it comes to money because I am very smart at it.

“Nobody in my family is an accountant so I guess that’s the other reason I took this up because I wanted to be different.”

She dedicates her achievements to her parents.

“All of these are for my parents,” she said.

“They have sacrificed so much for me, they even left our home at A’opo just so that my siblings and I can have better futures especially education.

“I have seen them struggle and sweat just so we can come to school and have food on the table and today this is the beginning of something good.

“Being the top student in college makes me think positive that I can do in N.U.S. as well and I am praying for a scholarship so that I can be a step closer to my dreams.

“I want to give back to my parents and I know this is the only way I know I can is to do well and work hard in school.”

Hiroko also acknowledges the support of her teachers and parents throughout her education.
