Samoa’s scenic paths separate it from surrounding countries

Twenty-one year old Kalani Pihana from Missouri State in America followed her family roots back to Samoa.

“My great grandmother was Samoan and I was really excited to explore such a beautiful place that I have family connections with,” Kalani told the Samoa Observer.

“I’ve always wanted to come here; it’s been a life-long dream of mine.”

Kalani spent the weekend in the Viaula Beach Fales at Tafatafa on the south coast.

“I didn’t know what to expect. It was an experience that I will probably never get again.”

With a night costing only $70 tala, including two delicious meals cooked by the family, the fales are a budget-friendly accommodation option for the adventurous traveller.

“I woke up early to watch the sunrise and go for a swim,” she said. “I didn’t realise how warm the sea would be!”

She spent the remainder of the day sunbathing and enjoying cocktails from the beach bar. As well as taking in the panoramic views while swinging in her hammock.

Kalani has been particularly impressed by the “community centred spirit of the people”.

This is one of the main differences she noted.

“Everyone helps each other out which is different to back home.”

While driving through the mountains, she stumbled upon the Fuipisa falls. “There’s so many places to see that aren’t even on the maps.” Samoa is certainly known for its tropical climate and sandy beaches, but the island’s scenic mountains paths separates it from the surrounding countries.

She said Samoa’s tropical reputation gave her the “opportunity to explore somewhere none of my family been.” She added that she would be sure to recommend a visit to the paradise island to her friends in America.

“I would tell anyone that’s even considering coming to Samoa to definitely do it! Its 100% worth the trip.”
