Since the beginning of July, the Samoa Stationery and Books has been promoting the importance of Literacy.

Yesterday, it conducted a Book Fair at their Megastore at Togafuafua.

As part of the fair, Rotary Samoa and S.S.A.B. gave out free books to all the children who were there.

According to the President and Managing Director of S.S.A.B. Fiti Leung Wai, she commented that her love for books is the main reason why she decided to conduct a Book Fair.

“My heart is for all the Samoan children to be smart and do well at school,” she said.

“We want them to do well in education because that will open up all sorts of great opportunities."

“Education can change their lives, break down barriers of poverty, enable them to succeed in life and also contribute to our economy."

“[And] hopefully if they do well they will also lend a hand to be a blessing to others because that has always been my prayer when I first setup this shop that I be bless so that I blessed others.”

Mrs. Leung Wai added that they are also in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (M.E.S.C.) in promoting Literacy which is their upcoming event.

“They (M.E.S.C.) will be the main coordinator and we will be the major sponsor which is another event later on the year where we will promote Literacy and Numeracy and Science,” she said.

“I also applaud M.E.S.C. for continuing these nationwide promotions to improve the children’s education in terms of literacy, numeracy and science."

“Literacy has always been the banner that we carried when it first started and the reason why we were first setup, it’s because of my love of books and also my strong belief in education."

“I want to share that success because without education I wouldn’t have been able to run this shop and I want all the children in Samoa to do well in school and be a scholar or a professor or just do well in whatever they do."

“I also want to encourage the parents to read to their children and also encourage their children to love reading."

“If they really want their children to do well in school then they (parents) have to encourage their children to keep on reading and understand."

“I also preferred that every reader should have a dictionary so that they can understand the words written in the books.”

Lastly, she added that she hopes all the children in Samoa love to read as it will help them grow.

She also acknowledge the support of the parents as well as their children for attending S.S.A.B.’s Book Fair.
