St. Mary’s College explains

A concerned parent of a student attending St. Mary’s College has questioned the overall results of the Year 9 level at the school.

This follows the school’s prize giving list published in the Samoa Observer where only the overall results in each level were published including Year 9.

The article shows first place awarded to Lupeoaunuu Va’ai, second place went to Vardia A. Caffarelli and third place awarded to Pekina Maualaivao. This placing was questioned by the parent.

“How come Pekina Maualaivao came third in the overall level but she came third in Year 9 Taema,” the parent told the Samoa Observer. “My daughter came second in Year 9 Taema, but what shocked me is that she does not have a placing in the Year 9 level. Yet the student who came third in her class got a placing in the overall Year 9 level.

“I went to the college and sat down with Sister Pelenatete Peni where she admitted it was their mistake. I am not happy because how come they could make such mistake?” she said.

St. Mary’s College Principal, Sister Pelenatete Peni said it was the printing of certificates that caused the problem.

“No one was able to capture the mistake. I admitted to the parent that the mistake was on us and I sincerely apologized to the parent and the daughter,” she said.

“In our records, Gataiamanu Va’ai Ah Him should be 3rd in the overall level of Year 9, second was Vardia Caffarelli and 1st place was Lupeoaunuu Va’ai.

“In our records it clearly identified that Gataiamanu Vaai should be third in overall for Year 9 level, but not the student who came third in year 9 Taema.

“The parent of Pekina Maualaivao already returned the certificate and we have already apologised to the parent and she also understands the situation.

“We already re-printed the certificate for Gataiamanu Va’ai Ah Him and have contacted the mother by phone but there was no answer.

“In the meantime, the certificate hasn’t been picked and it is still with us,” says Sister Pelenatete Stowers.

The parent said such incidents should not be happening.

“I would love to see my daughter’s name on the list of overall awards for Year 9 level as well.”
