The Prime Minister delivered this speech at the New Zealand High Commissioner’s residence at Letava on Thursday evening.

“High Commissioner, Jackie Frizelle.  Valerie Adams, New Zealand Sports Ambassador. Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

It was during the month of September during the forum leaders meeting in Pohnpei that I and three other Pacific leaders participated in an event at which the Honorable Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, announced New Zealand’s assistance towards the development of the sports of rugby and netball initially in four countries including Samoa.

The aim of the programme is to encourage the active participation of young people in sports and developing healthy lifestyles.

Tonight we are happy to welcome, New Zealand’s first Sports Ambassador, a well acclaimed shot putter and role model athlete.

No doubt, Ms. Adams will provide the inspiration to all our youth to achieve higher and pursue sports oriented career pathways.

For most Pacific countries, sports offers real opportunities for our young people, particularly those who fall short of achieving an academic career.

We accept the assistance by New Zealand, to build our numbers and ensure that new doors are open for our youth to secure futures in sports achievements as athletes, players, technical officials and administrators.

I’m sure you will join me in wishing Ms. Adams all the best in her new role.

We look forward to whenever you visit Samoa again.”
