Govt. criticised over poor condition of roads

Fifty- nine Pasi Lualua, of Tuanai, is a concerned villager.

He is unhappy about poor state of their road and with the heavy rain continuing, he said it is unlikely to get better in a hurry.

“We had put in a request to the government to fix our road but up until now, nothing has been done,” he said.

“We had our previous mayors who had made a request to the government and this year we have a new mayor and he’s done the same thing and still nothing.

“When road workers come they just cover the road with dirt so when it rains that dirt completely washes off and then and then we face the same problem again.”

Lualua urged the government to prioritise people and their needs.

“We have a lot of families who live here and most of them have vehicles,” he said.

“They are paying a heavy price for the government’s inability to fix the road. We even have buses coming here.

“A lot of cars have been wrecked because of the road condition and people are already struggling trying to get by with the expensive cost of living.

“We don’t want to spend money on fixing cars because we have families to take care of.

“There are also not enough jobs for the people to work in and for people like us who survive through the plantation spending money on fixing cars is the least of our worries.

“However, cars are very useful to us because our plantations are far from home so we go by cars and if our vehicles are damaged because of this problem then it’s a burden after another.

“This is why I am urging the government to please fix our roads, that is all we are asking for.

“We are already struggling but we still manage to get by but if this continues then we have nobody to depend on.”

Speaking of trying to get by Lualua said despite the hardship that people face they must work hard.

“I know life is hard, but if we don’t work then we get nothing,” he said.

“We cannot rely on anyone nowadays even our children overseas so we must stand on our two feet and do the best we can to make sure our families are okay.

“Yes, cost of living is sky rocketing but what can we do?

“We can complain all we want but the govt. will do what they think is right so all we have to do is to have patient and faith. Hard work always pays off one way or another.”
