The University of the South Pacific opened its gates to the public for its annual Open Day Festivities yesterday guided by the theme “Shaping your Future.”

The Open Day allowed the public to bear witness to the University’s facilities, resources, and services and find out for themselves the numerous educational opportunities offered at the campus.

The Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Solamalemalo Sio delivered the keynote address.

“Today’s theme is Shaping your future,” he said. “So let me reiterate the strategic role that agriculture plays in the economy and the livelihood in the Pacific region.

“As most of you know the Alafua campus in Samoa has been the scene for agriculture education in the south Pacific region for the last four decades.

“Many of our people working as scientists in agriculture ministries and occupying important positions for agriculture scientists are graduates of U.S.P Alafua Campus.

“In recognizing the importance of agriculture the government of Samoa in partnership with U.S.P has allocated 20 scholarships annually since 2013.

Lastly, he advised to choose their future careers wisely.

“As prospective students you have the opportunity today to think and decide what you really like to do in the future,” said Loau.

 “Gather as much information as possible and definitely asses what is best for you by choosing a university that will help you develop your special abilities and qualities into a career.”

As part of the celebration the Rotary Club presented scholarships to five students of Pacific T.A.F. Foundation students.

The day ended with cultural performances as well as campus tour for all students who attended the event.
