Family’s pursuit for better opportunities
Relocating from Savai’i to Upolu to pursue better opportunities is nothing new.
After all parents only want the best for their children.
Talavou Tafilinuu, 52, is no exception.
The man relocated his family from Asaga, Savaii to Falelauniu with the hope of a bright future for his children.
“Our only wish is for our children to do well in the future,” he said.
“We know there are better educational opportunities in Upolu and that made us come here.”
The Village Voice caught up with Talavou on his way to pick up his children from school.
The father of eight said his priority are his children.
“I’m thankful to God for blessing my family with eight kids. It’s hard caring and providing for a big family like us but I consider it a blessing to have this many children.
“Even though we are struggling but we want to give our best for our children.”
Talavou is looking for a job.
He said he would take any job to help his family. The number of children he has means a lot to pay in terms of school fees and other expenses.
“Some of our families overseas send money for the kids school fees, water and electricity bills as well and some money for food,” he said.
“Otherwise, we have plantation for food. We don’t sell it.”
So has the move from Savai’i worked out?
“It’s a long term investment,” he said. “There are positives and negatives but that is what’s expected.
“For me, I’m really keen on finding a job. I know looking for a job is not easy but I’m trying my best to look for one so whatever pay I get, it can help me and my family.”
