Culture is your identity.

This was the theme of Avele College’s Culture Day.

School Principal, Matafeo Lesaisaea Reupena, said the day was an important occasion to remind students about the value of the Samoan culture.

“Our culture is our identity. It means Samoa is unique and this is what makes Samoa different from any other country in the world,” he said.

Matafeo added that it’s important for students to get a balance of learning in terms of theory and practical. The Culture Day is a practical learning opportunity.

“We want to balance the drive for academic and sports, as well as balancing of driving vocational subjects with our Samoa culture,” he said.

Friends, parents and teachers of Avele College gathered around the malae for the occasion. The students were divided into four houses, Lauma’alili, Toaula, Vaea and Puataunofo. All decked out in different colours, it was a fantastic occasion.

Matafeo said the activities of the day were based on the curriculum of Year 12 and 13 levels.

“The Ta’alolo ceremony (Samoan cultural event), demonstrations of making Samoan Food, performing arts and producing Samoan handicrafts,” he said.

The food component is always an important part of Samoan culture.

“We have used all the products within our Agriculture Science department for today, promoting healthy eating within our communities”.

Matafeo concluded that the day was a great success.
