Students from nine colleges in the Apia area made history at Apia Park Stadium last Wednesday.

They tried out Quick Rip, a  sport that’s being introduced to Samoa.

According to one of the officials, Jack Livings from England, the sport is from a partnership between the Samoa government, New Zealand Rugby and the Samoa Rugby Union.

“The sport is funded to promote skills and healthy living”.

“It also covers sportsmanship, teamwork respect and leadership”.

Jack Livings mentioned promoting healthy living by playing the sport and getting fit as well but most of all, to understand the nutrition side.

He also spoke about the values of a student.

In sports they can learn about teamwork, respecting their opposition as well as positive  sportsmanship between the students.

“This is a five year agreement and Samoa is the pilot for this tournament”.

The programme is hoping to extend to the students in Savaii and also in the outer villages.

Quick Rip sport is a combination of two games.

“This is a combination of tag rugby and rugby 7s as a fast paced game”.

The sport is open to both boys and girls from age 13 to 17 and also students are allowed to referee the games to upskill their leadership.

The Regional Coordinator of Quick Rip, Ms Lauano June Teaurima is working together with the Samoa Rugby Union promoting the sport in Samoa.

She is also working closely with the Projects Abroad Volunteers from all around the world in running and processing the tournament for schools in Samoa,

The Quick Rip is scheduled to move to Savaii next week and continue on to outer villages within the next five weeks of the programme.
