The Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (SASNOC) has had its first ever Olympic Day Games in Savaii to promote and encourage Olympic and Non-Olympic sports in rural Samoa said the C.E.O. Faamausili Taiva Ah Young.

The Olympic Day Games started on Friday afternoon 10 June, where SASNOC and National Sports Federation representatives met with athletes to start introducing their sports.

Sports identified for this year are Volleyball, Hockey, Table Tennis, Athletics, Basketball and Cricket International.

On Saturday, there was a competition in these sports which ended in the afternoon.

The Olympic Day Games is one of the three annual events that SASNOC is staging to create competition and most importantly an avenue to start selecting elite athletes.

Once elite athletes are identified then comes the preparation of the Samoa Elite team for major events such as the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and Pacific Games through the Oceania Institute of Sports.

This process will now eliminate the on-going last minute preparation but instead preparation of athletes will begin well ahead of these major events.

The other annual event that SASNOC is organising for later in the year is the Samoa Games in November.

If you want to learn more about these activities Faamausili Taiva Ah Young said he can be contacted on 25033 or 7611834, and Tuna Matalavea, the SASNOC Sports Coordinator for Savaii can be reached on 25033 or 7736471.
