White Sunday is a time of giving

It is that time of the year again where children look forward to being indulged with gifts and special treats from their parents.

As Samoa celebrates White Sunday today, some child vendors hope their wish for a new white attire and special food will be fulfilled with whatever their family earns.

Nine-years-old Sofia Tele from Matautu was selling hair accessories on the streets of Apia when Sunday Samoan spotted her.

“I’m here with my parents and siblings so I am not alone and we all work together so we can try and earn as much as we can so that we will have enough to get by daily.”

“My only wish for White Sunday is to have a beautiful white dress and new shoes for my biblical recitation (tauloto) that I have been practicing for a long time.”

“I will be reciting Hebrews 11: 6: ‘But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him’,” she said.

Sofia said White Sunday is her favourite holiday because all the kids get special treatment and special food as well in their church.

Dave Sione, 13, from Saleimoa was busy selling popcorn when Sunday Samoan approached him.

Dave said that both he and his mother were in town selling popcorn so that they can get enough money to do their White Sunday shopping, but their priority is on food.

“All I want for White Sunday is the chance to have a brand new white outfit so that I can wear to perform my scriptural recitation verses.”

“I am more than prepared for Sunday, the Bible verses I will recite is from 1 John 4: 18-20 - ‘There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen’.”

Dave said he likes White Sunday because kids are spoiled not only at church but at home too.

“I hope there will be ice cream and cake this year just like last year,” he said.
