The cost of living might be a nightmare for some families but they are grateful for the fact they have plantations.

So says father of five, Vili Savelio, 51, from the village of Tufulele.

Mr. Savelio met the Village Voice team yesterday.

He said life in Samoa today was really hard.

“It is not easy anymore because the cost of living is so expensive right now compared to the past.

“We can easily tell the difference today with the price of things especially with what we earn and the value of our money.

“Back then $100 was enough to support the whole family throughout the week unlike today $100 can only be used for one day.”

Mr. Savelio added he never worked, but his plantation was all he had to support his family up until now.

“My family has been supported through my plantation because I have been selling most of the stuff in order to get money.

“I have two children who are working now but when they were in school, the plantation helped paid their school fees.

“Now I only have three children still in school and my plantation is still there to support them.”

Mr. Savelio said the plantation for them was a gift and they never took it for granted.

“I am speaking from my own experience that I have supported my children and my family through my plantation, and it worked.

“I also believe that we have to keep working our plantation because that is free food for us and it’s our gift,” he said.
