It is unclear when parking meters in Apia’s Downtown area will become operational.

Land Transport Authority, in a recent post on their Facebook page, advised that the September 1 commencement date for fees to be charged has now been deferred to a later date.

“The public is hereby advised that the Parking Meters will not be effective Saturday, 1st September 2018. The exact commencement date will be advised later by the Authority.”

Eight parking meters have been installed in front of the ANZ Bank to the S.N.P.F. Plaza with fees ranging from $1 Tala for the first 15 minutes to $4 Tala for an hour of parking. Motorists who park for eight hours from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm will be charged $32 Tala. The parking meters will only operate from Mondays to Fridays during the pilot period.

The L.T.A. Chief Executive Officer, Galumalemana Titi Tutuvanu –Schwalger, said the installation of the new parking meters will generate revenue for the Authority as well as make commuting easier for motorists.

“The revenues generated from parking meters will fund part of road maintenances costs."

“It is no great secret that L.T.A. does not have the financial resources to meet the demands of our country, and maintaining roads for the safety of our travelling public is paramount to the authority,” she added.
