Age is only a number. This Saturday, the ‘Golden Girls’ netball tournament at the Samoa College Netball Courts will give players who haven’t been able to put their skills to the test lately a chance to do so.

The tournament is hosted by the Samoa College Old Pupil’s Association (S.C.O.P.A) Netball Club in partnership with Samoa Stationery and Books (S.S.A.B.).

Guided by the theme, “Healthy Women, Healthy Nation”, the tournament is inviting women 45 years and over to participate.

The announcement was made yesterday during a press conference at the S.S.A.B Conference Room.

It was fronted by Gaualofa Matalavea Sa’aga, S.C.O.P.A.’s Netball Club and the Chief Executive Officer of S.S.A.B., Fiti Leung Wai.

The ‘Golden Girls, 45+’ concept was initiated by the older kinfolk of S.C.O.P.A netball club.

The initiative encourages healthy living for adult women and it supports the empowerment of women through sports as a vehicle to share and engage with each other.

According to Gaualofa, the tournament is all about encouraging the more senior players.

“That is why we are encouraging healthy practices and activities such as tournaments like this so that our women can participate in.”

Gaualofasaid the tournament is in line with the push from the government for a healthy Samoa.

It also targets eliminating violence against women in families.

“Some of our members are working with some of the influential Non-governmental organizations who are working towards ending violence against women.

“And while we have this tournament as well, these members will bring in their expertise and talk to the younger generation and share their knowledge about how to put a stop to violence against women.”

The C.E.O of S.S.A.B, Fiti Leung Wai says she is excited about the event.

As an old student of Samoa College, Mrs. Leung Wai says S.S.A.B. is happy to support such a great initiative.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the older generation not only to participate, but also share their skills and knowledge with the younger generation on how to play netball.

“They were the ones who played the sport when it first started and some of them represented Samoa overseas, so this is an opportunity for them to engage with the younger generation and also have the opportunity to feel what it’s like to play again.”

Moreover, Mrs. Leung Wai also stated that this sponsorship is part of S.S.A.B.’s community outreach programme.

S.S.A.B. through this partnership will be providing cash for the tournament and also in kind donation such as jumping castles for the kids and vouchers.

There are 10 teams that have been confirmed to participate in the tournament.
