Thirteen private sector organisations received funds that were approved by Cabinet to assist with their administrative costs.

The funds were presented to them yesterday morning at the Office of the Prime Minister by the Acting Prime Minister, Lautafi Fio Purcell.

“This Government initiative commenced in 1997 with only two private sector organisations and to date has increased to 13 private sectors,” Lautafi said.

“The grant also started out at $30,000 and now it has increased to $200,000.”

According to a press release from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour (M.C.I.L.), the eligible organisations are those with affiliations and are registered with the M.C.I.L under the Incorporated Societies legislation.

“A number of factors are also considered in determining the amount of grant to be awarded to each organisation such as registered membership, established office, submission of audited financial account and strategic plans as well as progress of developments projects.

“The total grant of the financial year 2017/2018 is $200,000.

“From the normal grant, the amount of $40,000 has been embarked for the Women in Business Development Incorporated to assist with their organic certification activities, whilst remaining grant is allocated to other private sector organisations to assist with their administrative costs.”

Lautafi acknowledged the private sector for continuing to contribute to Samoa’s economy and the Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening and harnessing a closer partnership with the private sector.

“The objective of this initiative is to improve the businesses for the development of the country as well as the Government,” he said.

“Last year there were 12 organizations that received this blessing but this year one new organization came in this year and that is the Samoa Banana Farmers Association which is led by a former Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau.

“So I want to thank you all for all the hard work that you are doing in developing the country, keep doing what you are doing.”

Tuisugaletaua thanked the Government for the initiative.
