Resources aren’t only found in a workplace. Some are hidden in the soil.

Toni Tuilau from Leauva’a knows this.

Despite being unemployed, he chooses to work the land to support his family and he finds this more rewarding.

The single 32-year-old said two people in his family work.

His sister and brother are the ones that deal with all the bills, the shopping for each week while he provides the crops for every day food.

Mr. Tuilau said his plantation is mainly to feed his family.

“The way I am living life at the moment is just to support my family,” he said.

“I used to work but I have changed my focus. I feel that it is better for me to stay home instead and look after my family and help them.”

He is grateful for the weather in Samoa.

He is especially happy with the rain because it waters his crops and allows him to harvest them quickly.

“I am thankful for the rain since it is watering the earth to make things grow but at the same time it is causing the grass to grow as well,” he said.

“Being a farmer requires a hard worker since you battle with the sun every day and when the weather is not being friendly you have to be patient and not give up easily.”

That said, Mr. Tuilau shared that in this rainy season, it is much easier for him to walk to his plantation and come back because it is much cooler outside.

This is as opposed to hot days where people easily give up.

Asked how life is generally, he said he is grateful for everything that comes his way.

He believes that life is good for him and his family since they are stable in terms of the water supply and the electricity.

Despite the growing cost of living, he said people don’t have to buy the most expensive things to get by.

He reminded that whether your diet is elegi or steak, the most important rule is to be happy and grateful.
