Firemen save former Cabinet Minister's home

Former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament, Tuisugaleataua Sofara Aveau, looked on in horror yesterday afternoon as fire gutted his family home at Fagalii.

The two-storey building had already lost the second floor to the blaze. But quick action by officers from the Fire and Emergency Service Authority (FESA) enabled them to save the ground floor of the family home.

Tuisugaleataua stood from afar and watched the fire raze through the top floor and appeared to be visibly shaken at the loss, as he watched FESA officers go through the charred remains of the property.

The former MP and his teenage daughter – who was also at the scene – refused to comment when approached by the Samoa Observer.

The house is next to the road, forcing policemen to block the road and divert traffic while firemen cleared and secured the property.

Eyewitnesses told this newspaper that the prompt action of the FESA also saved a recently opened fuel station from the blaze, as the fuel station is located close to the family home of the former Cabinet Minister and the consequences could have been catastrophic.

Comment is being sought from the FESA.
