Hundreds of government and private sector officials are turning election officials for the day. These are the people who will help administer the election throughout the country today.

Many of them are on the big island of Savai’i. They left Upolu on a special voyage yesterday afternoon.

“I’m actually really excited about this,” an official who gave his name as Leua John said. “It’s great to be part of a special occasion, an opportunity where we can contribute to the advancement of democracy in Samoa.”

The officials include teachers, accountants, lawyers, administrators and all sorts of professions. They also include mothers and fathers.

The officials were billeted out last night.

They will go to work early in the morning today to ensure the voting papers are ready by 8am. When voting closes at 3pm, the officials will take the ballot boxes back to Mulinu’u where the official count begins.

The election officials are joined by more than 400 Police officers who have been allocated to different parts of the country to monitor the process.

The first results should be known at around 5pm and the count is expected to continue well in to the night.
