The 10th annual Health Sector Forum was opened on Wednesday at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi said during his opening remarks that the National Health Week was very important to Samoa.

In line with the forum’s theme “Envisioning the Future of Samoa’s Health System”, Tuilaepa said: “The future of Samoa’s health system guides long term programs to create more awareness of staying healthy.”

Since 2008, Samoa’s Health sector has been implementing its 2008-2018 Health Sector Plan that aims to strengthen health service delivery for all Samoans.

Tuilaepa explained that it’s been 10 years since the National Health Service and Ministry of Health were separated.

“Bear in mind the government is prioritizing our long term developments in the health sector especially our people’s health for today and the future.

“I believe that we are at the right time to address health issues that occurred during the past years,” he said

The health sector annual review this year that assessed the performance of the financial year July 2016-June 2017, revealed significant results in the form of strengthened health systems, improved access of the population to healthcare and improved health outcome.

The forum is an attempt for the health sector to envision what is or are needed to be strengthened to further enhance health service delivery in the next nine years commencing in July 2018, and to accelerate the realization of health-related Sustainable Development Goals as well as national priorities.
