A pathologist from Fiji will soon be working for the Ministry of Police, confirmed Acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga on Tuesday at the Ministry of Police’s conference room.

Leiataua explained that after the position for a pathologist was advertised, only one applicant applied. He said the applicant is an overseas citizen. He said the applicant went through the full hiring process, including an interview, and the last step now is to make its official.

“The process has been done,” said Leiataua. “The only thing left is to hire him.”

The Acting Commissioner went on to explain that the pathologist will be working under the Ministry of Police, which will help make investigations faster and easier for police.

Leiataua also mentioned that the budget discussed by the former Police Commissioner for the position has been continued. He stated that the total allocated amount to hire the pathologist is $250,000.

When asked how many cases require the pathologist’s services, Leiataua said that at the moment, he is aware of two cases in particular.

He also provided an update on the case of a Samoa Water Authority employee who recently passed away due to an accident. The Commissioner confirmed that the body is still at the hospital, awaiting examination by the pathologist.

Additionally, Leiataua confirmed that they are currently investigating a case involving a 76-year-old elderly man, Eti Sapoulu, who was recently beaten and robbed. The police have received the report and are continuing their investigation, though there are currently no suspects.

The Acting Commissioner concluded by reassuring the public that the investigations are ongoing, and the pathologist’s appointment will help speed up these processes.
