For the first time, the Government of Samoa, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E.) is celebrating the importance of Land and Soil not only as an asset and natural identity but also as a natural resource.

Throughout this week, the Government through M.N.R.E. and its supporting partners through various competitions, workshops and activities, are aiming to increase public awareness of land degradation and drought issues (L.D.D.) in Samoa.

This also includes clarifying policies, legislations and programmes to help address L.D.D. issues as well as increasing awareness of the role of the United Nation’s Convention to Combat Desertification (U.N.C.C.D.) or land degradation in the context of Samoa.

The Land Week also serves to create awareness of the progressive work and achievements of the Project - Strengthening Multi Sectoral Management of Critical Landscapes for Samoa (S.M.S.M.C.L. Project).

The project realises Samoa’s efforts to ensure that its critical landscapes are protected through an integrated focus by national government and funding partners on landscape management to reduce land degradation and promote nature conservation while increasing sustainable local livelihoods.

This Project was established to ensure land degradation concerns across all levels of society are well addressed through the integration of sustainable landscape management into planning framework and actions across multi-sectoral arrangements in order to achieve the Government’s long term goals.

Also during this week, the Ministry aims to create greater public awareness of the land administration services provided by its Land Management Division (L.M.D.).

This will enable the Ministry to inform the public of the assistance provided by this division will help address any and all land development issues.

The week-long celebration will conclude with an official ceremony in the big island of Savai’i.
