Samoa Observer launches 2016 Tusitala Short Story competition

21 August 2016, 12:00AM

Entries are submitted online by writers living in three regions – Australia and New Zealand, the rest of the Pacific and Samoa. From those regional winners, the two overall winners are then selected

A search for the best writers in English and Samoan in the Pacific is underway again with the launch of the 2016 Samoa Observer Tusitala Short Story Competition.

As in 2015, the Samoa Observer is calling on writers in Samoa and throughout the Pacific to share their stories in either English or Samoan.

Following the success of the competition in 2015 and a prize giving which awarded substantial prize money to the six category winners and two overall winners, the competition also rewards the authors of Highly Recommended stories.

“Those extra eight stories are included in a publication which is produced after the prize giving.”

Once again, the Samoa Observer has been strongly supported by local businesses and organisations including Digicel, Ah Liki Construction, Air New Zealand, the National Bank of Samoa, the United Nations, Samoa Spare Parts, Ace Hardware and Samoa Builders Supplies and the ANZ Bank.

“We are particularly proud that all sponsorship for the prizes and related costs of the competition, come from local Samoan companies and organizations and we thank them for their belief and generous financial contributions.”

A new prize of NZ$300 has been added to the list of prizes for 2016.

It has been donated by S.P.A.C.L.A.L.S. and will be presented by Dr. Selina Tusitala Marsh.

Entries are submitted online by writers living in three regions – Australia and New Zealand, the rest of the Pacific and Samoa. From those regional winners, the two overall winners are then selected.

The publication, “Our Heritage, the Ocean” which is an anthology from the 2015 competition is available from B.S.L., Eveni, Legends Café and Art Gallery, Siva  Afi, the Samoa Tourism Authority, S.S.A.B. and the Samoa Observer office in Apia as well as online at www.shopsamoa.com

The book contains 17 diverse stories from authors in American Samoa, Australia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand and Niue.
