Man leaves family in Savai’i to look for job
Pita Fa’amatala is desperately looking for a job.
The 30-year-old left his family at Savai’i last week and now stays with his sister and brother in law at Toamua-uta while he looks for work.
“The reason I came here is to look for a job to support my family in Savai’i,” Pita told the Village Voice team yesterday.
“That’s the main reason I left my family because I know there are heaps of factories and companies and even families that I could get a job from.”
He said there’s a lack of job opportunities in Savai’i.
“We all know that Savai’i is not like Upolu, I mean the only place that you could look for a job at the big island is Salelologa.
“That’s why I’m here. I’m desperate to find a job.
“I think that’s the main goal for me because I have a family to think about.”
Pita knows that life is not a walk in the park.
“That’s the reality in Samoa these days, the cost of living is high and we just can’t move on if we don’t have money.
“In Savai’i we have heaps of crops, taro rotting everywhere but the problem is always money and also the lack of job opportunities for many.
“You know the cost of living is not cheap anymore and it’s a difficult life if you don’t have a job to earn money.
“The Samoan life is all about church and village obligations and those are some of the things I need to work hard for so I can finance them and support my family,” Pita said.
He added that at the moment, they depended on the plantation for food and money in Savai’i but it is never enough.
“It’s hard to sell taro in front of your house when all other families have their own plantation so we hardly collect any money from selling taro there,” Pita said.
“I’m a hardworking person and I know I have to be every day because I have a reason to be like that.
“Nobody wants to see a lazy person around at home when they don’t have a job so that’s why I’m here looking for a job.
“I will give all my strength and ability if I’m offered a job and I mean any kind of job,” he added.
Pita’s phone numbers are 7284033/7206090 should there be someone willing to offer employment.
