Friends from Switzerland visit Samoa as part of world tour

Among those who were part of the cultural tour at the Samoa Tourism fale yesterday were friends, Thomas Thentz and Sylvaen Jaquet from Switzerland.

Dear Tourist met the friends braving the rain in Apia just to learn and understand more about the Samoan way of life.

While Sylvaen, 34, was browsing through the displayed tapa, Thomas, 28, shared with Dear Tourist how they ended up in the heart of the Pacific.

The  friends are actually embarking on a world tour and just six months into their one year journey, they find themselves entrenched in an island with a deep cultural and traditional background.

They arrived last week Saturday for a one week stay and it’s so far, so good for the lads.

“Before we came here, we were in Hawaii and we will be leaving for New Zealand next. So while we’re in this region, we said why not Samoa,” Thomas said.

“It’s been amazing. When we arrived on Saturday, we went straight to Namu’a Island and we stayed in a fale there.

“Today we will be going for a hike and we had a driver who took us around to the To Sua Ocean Trench and Piula Cave Pool and it was really great.

“I knew about the To Sua Ocean Trench before I came here because I read about it at home and to finally see it is a really a memorable experience for me.”

This is the second time the friends are embarking on such a journey, the first time took them six months.

“When we came back from our first travel, we soon realized that we have to travel again, so we saved our money for three years and so we left July this year and we will be travelling until next July.”

Thomas said they both found the Samoan people and their culture interesting.

“The driver who was taking us around was very knowledgeable and he shared about their culture and tradition and so did the owner of the fale we stayed in and it is really interesting,” he said.

The friends have unfinished business with our paradise and that is to visit the big island of Savai’i.

Plans to return?

Don’t count them out yet.
